Using Twitter, Facebook and the web to be a productive well-rounded netizen
I remember I had an excellent teacher in high school (there were a couple) and he always advocated what he called the renaissance lifestyle. Basically, everything in moderation, nothing in excess.
I was reading an article on ReadWriteWeb the other day that made me think of this. They had come across an article about a study done by The University of Melbourne that showed that people who use the Internet for personal reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive that those who do not.
I’m inclined to agree with ReadWriteWeb though that I think the 9% is probably low.
The study included 300 workers, 70% of which use the Internet at work engage in what they termed Workplace Internet Leisure Browsing (WILB). Many of the popular activities, searching for information about products, reading online news sites and watching YouTube movies, are things that have directly improved my productivity.
Here’s a tip. Try using YouTube to find software tutorials. You’ll be amazed at what you find. I used YouTube to find some very good tutorials geared specifically for my DSLR camera.
Taking a moment to do some casual research or surfing can also be good from a creative standpoint. You can only focus so long. From Dr Coker, “People need to zone out for a bit to get back their concentration. Think back to when you were in class listening to a lecture – after about 20 minutes your concentration probably went right down, yet after a break your concentration was restored.”
The original release on the study can be found on the University of Melbourne website.
And yes, I know I’ve dated myself by using Netizen. I use it because I can
